This organization, located in Sarasota, Florida, aims to provide aid and assistance to children. Children’s first is a charitable, private non-profit administration directed by Jo Rutstein. Over six-hundred children of Sarasota County are currently being helped. Aid is also extended to the children’s families to further ensure assistance. Services are provided at a number of locations throughout Sarasota. One of their main goals is to provide an environment that will prepare children for kindergarten by involving children in different classes and programs. Children are given the care and tools necessary to succeed in school. It is an early head start to enhance the development of infants.
Week 2 Interview
The second week, was an awkward week, as we observed at Children First. It was full of uncomfortable introductions, and overwhelming children. Elisabeth’s first ten minutes, were some introvert’s nightmare. She walked into the classroom, introduced herself to the teacher, and after the teacher introduced the children and herself, she gave Elisabeth her first task - stand in the corner and wait for instructions. In front of all the children in the room, and behind the teacher, she stood, twiddling her thumbs, lost and confused on what to do, feeling “out of place” for ten minutes. Freddie, another volunteer in a different classroom, had an even less friendly introduction. He wasn’t acknowledged by the teacher, or the two other volunteers (teaching assistants), but was just instructed to stand there like Elisabeth. However, Fred and his personality took a different route than the awkward standing that was laid ahead of him. He sat down next to a little pre-kindergarten kid and asked them what he wanted to know; what was the teacher’s name, what were their names, and what was planned for the day? As the day went on for them they learned how about hectic it is to take care of a classroom filled with one year olds at the playground. Elisabeth was on slide duty, Fred swing duty, and found kids from other classes running to them, asking for turns, and struggling to keep site of kids in their classroom. When it was time for Elisabeth’s class to leave recess, her and the teacher both noticed a child was still at the playground, they ran through it frantically and both witnessed the kid face planting off the jungle gym and onto the ground. They both responded very well and took care of the kid and brought the children back to the classroom. It is safe to assume that the volunteers felt that their instructors may have been rude in the beginning, but after that first recess I feel like they discovered very caring, but worn-out ladies, as demonstrated by the teacher rushing to take care of the lost child.
