Week 2 Interview

Last week, Carly, went to volunteer at the Pine’s thrift store with a couple of her friends.  I had the opportunity to ask about the details of Carly’s experience.  The group arrived early in the morning to a quiet unopened shop.  After a debriefing, they were asked to split into two groups.  It broke up the comfort of the entire group and they had to overcome the initial task of finding their comfort zone and develop a new relationship with their employers.

Initially it was a little awkward as Carly and her half of the group sat with Amy in a small dingy room that smelt of old people diapers.  There was only one stool, so  they sat on the large table in the room folding clothes while listening to radio. As the volunteer work went on, the volunteers and the coordinators started talking more and sharing life stories. Working became more comfortable and eventually changed from being a generic task of folding clothes to an interesting time to share stories while sorting out clothing for elderly to purchase. As Carly and her volunteer partner Michelle kept folding and sorting clothes, they could hear several elderly people trickling in.

It was a bit awkward for Carly to leave at 11:15. Initially, they were told to work till 12, but everyone’s schedule was busy so they had to depart.
